En bas avec l'Allemagne ! Aller la France !

My name is Jaucques Penny. I am an artillary operator and a front-lines man fighting in the war. My regiment is fighting against Germany on the western front. This whole war is because of Germany. For some reason they think that they are important or something. I have heard there soliders chanting "Respect for Germany". Why does Germany think they should have "respect" they are nothing but an insecure nation that thinks that they deserve something from the rest of us!

I have to fight out of trenches when i am on the front-lines.

This is a picture of me when i got a break form fighting. (I am the one on the left)

Here are the goats that i raise back home. I was so glad that the stupid german guy Zimmerman screwed up and brought the US into the war on our side I named my farm after him.

When I'm not on the front lines i operate artillery .

Here is a video on how the artillery works.

November 10-
It is starting to get cold i can tell it is going to be a harsh winter. I wish those stupid Germans would just give up they are going to lose and anyway. The artillery is very boring it is very monotonous blowing away at the germans not knowing if we are even hitting them. I think i am going deaf because of the loud artillery i can't sometimes I can't hear what the commands when they are given to me.
November 17-
I was put on the front lines and I wish I was still on the artillery. It is a little less boring because it isn't the same thing over and over. But it is a lot more dangerous. Every-time the whistle blows I have to go over the top where the enemy can shoot at me and i can barely see them because they are in there trenches. If i don't go over the top then I will be punished for disobeying commands.
This is where in France I am fighting:

November 24-
It is horrible seeing your friends die. I convinced my friend Pierre to join and he died yesterday. I feel responsible for his death i don't know how i will face his family when i get home. It is so hard to see the people around die. I feel guilty because i am alive. I feel like i have nothing to look forward to i don't know if this war will ever end.
December 1-
It is December and it feels nothing like Christmas. I am not looking forward to spending Christmas with my family. It has been snowing and it makes the trenches much worst. They are slippery and we have little shelter from the weather.
December 7-
We keep fighting but it seems pointless. We haven't made any progress and neither has Germany. It seems so pointless i just wish the war would be over and I could go home.
December 14-
I can't believe that is almost Christmas there is certainly no christmas spirit here. I have heard that they are going to call a truce on Christmas it would be nice. I can't imagine a day without fighting.
December 25-
It is Christmas and they have called a Christmas truths. It is really weird without artillery blowing up everywhere. Christmas just isn't the same without my family. We are going to eat goose and some men have found mistletoe. It looks a little more festive but it just isn't the same. I miss my family.
I wrote this poem about the cease fire:

Bang! Bang! Bang!
Has stopped
Nothing,
is all i hear
laughter is in the air,
what a surprise,
I hope for and end to it all soon.

December 26-The break from the fighting was nice but we are already fighting again. Yesterday went to fast where as the war is going by so slow. The German forces seem to be a little weaker but we haven't made any progress. The way they are telling us to just go over the top seems like they don't feel like our lives matter.January 2-
When we were told to go over the top yesterday the guy next to me refused to go. So they shot him! They shot one of our own men! I couldn't believe it. He made a couple of us stay and carry his body our of the trench.
My Return Home-
Finally on the eleventh hour of the eleventh day of the eleventh month of 1918 the fighting was over. I returned home soon after. I was greeted with a parade and much rejoicing. WE HAD FINALLY WON THE WAR! (we later learned Germany didn't view it this way) My family was happy to see me and France was happy the war was over. We were hit hard by the but we pulled through thanks to our allies. I am glad to be home I feel relieved like a huge burden has been lifted off my chest. I no longer have to live in day to day fear but I will never forget the horrific memories of the fighting and all of the friends I lost. They will haunt me forever.
